The 6 Best Lightweight Laptops of 2025

Best Lightweight Laptops

As most of us travel with our laptops, finding one that isn't overly bulky or heavy is essential. Thankfully, there are tons of lightweight laptops on the market these days. You can even find mobile workstations and gaming laptops with powerful components that are as lightweight as ultraportables. That said, you want to be careful not to over-prioritize weight, as manufacturers often sacrifice build quality to make the laptop as light as possible. You also want to consider other aspects of the laptop, like the quality of the screen, keyboard, and touchpad, as well as the port selection, overall performance, and battery life. Last but not least, don't forget about the power adapter, as some laptops come with a huge brick that's as heavy as the laptop itself.

We've tested over 155 laptops, and below, you'll find our recommendations for the best lightweight laptops. You can also check out our recommendations for the best 13-14 inch laptops, the best ultrabooks, and the best business laptops. If you want to learn more about how we test laptops or our review process, check out this article, where we give you a quick rundown of each step from the moment we purchase the laptop to the final published review.

  1. Best Lightweight Laptop

The best lightweight laptop we've tested is the Apple MacBook Air 13 (M4, 2025). Sleek and compact, this premium 13.6-inch model weighs only 2.6 lbs (1.2 kg). On top of that, it feels remarkably well built, sporting a rigid, full-aluminum chassis. The user experience is amazing; it has a sharp Retina display that gets bright enough to combat glare, a spacious and tactile keyboard, a large haptic touchpad, and an excellent 1080p webcam with Center Stage support. Apple's M4 SoC can easily handle light productivity tasks and even some light video editing. Plus, this is a fanless device, which is great for noise-sensitive settings like classrooms and libraries.

Port selection is the biggest drawback on this laptop, as you only get two USB-Cs, a MagSafe charging port, and a headphone jack. Another minor complaint is that the display is still limited to a 60Hz refresh rate, whereas most premium Windows laptops have adopted a 90Hz or 120Hz panel. Apple has improved the MacBook Air's external display support, though, as you can now connect up to two 6k @ 60Hz monitors while using the built-in screen. Battery life is excellent at around 12 hours of light use, enough to get through a typical school or workday with plenty of charge to spare.

  2. Best Mid-Range Lightweight Laptop

Our mid-range pick is the Acer Swift Go 14 (2024). At 2.9 lbs (1.3 kg), this 14-inch Windows ultraportable is only a hair heavier than our top pick, the Apple MacBook Air 13 (M4, 2025). It doesn't feel quite as premium as the MacBook build-wise, but it's still pretty sturdy for the price and can likely withstand a few bumps here and there. You can get this laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 5, 7, or 9 CPU; they can all handle general productivity tasks, as well as more intensive stuff like programming and photo editing. RAM and storage max out at 32GB and 2TB, respectively—the RAM is soldered, so get enough for your needs upfront.

There are two display options: an FHD+ IPS or a 2.8k OLED panel. The latter delivers a better viewing experience and is better for productivity since it produces sharper text, but remember that it's susceptible to permanent burn-in and will drain the battery faster. Both panels get bright enough to combat glare in most indoor settings. Port selection is outstanding; you get two USB-As, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 4s, an HDMI, a MicroSD card reader, and a headphone jack. The battery lasts around 11 hours of light use, and it charges over USB-C, so there's no need to carry around a proprietary charger. There's Wi-Fi 6E wireless connectivity, a 1080p webcam, and a fingerprint sensor.

  3. Best Budget Lightweight Laptop

The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 (2023) is the best budget lightweight laptop we've tested. This compact 14-inch model is a great option if you only need a simple device for light tasks. It's available with an Intel N100, N200, or Core i3 processor; we recommend the latter paired with 8GB of RAM for the smoothest experience. The cheaper configurations with an Intel N100 or N200 CPU and/or 4GB of RAM are fine if you have an extremely light workload, but know that they'll get bogged down quickly when multitasking. You can find the Core i3 configuration regularly on sale through Lenovo.

It's somewhat the same story when it comes to the display. While you can probably get by with the 768p TN panel option, we highly recommend getting a model with a 1080p IPS screen. Not only does it look sharper, but it also has better viewing angles and color reproduction. Unfortunately, the keyboard feels a tad mushy, and the touchpad is small and sometimes unresponsive. One notable surprise is its excellent 1080p webcam, one of the best you can find on budget-friendly Chromebooks. Lastly, remember that Chrome OS is limited in the type of applications you can install, so make sure you can do everything through a Chrome browser or Android app.

  4. Best Lightweight 2-In-1 Tablet

Current Deal: The Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition (2024) has dropped in price by $300 at BestBuy.com.

If you like the versatility of 2-in-1 tablets, get the Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition (2024). Unlike 2-in-1s with a 360-degree hinge, you can remove the keyboard to make the device easier to hold. This also helps save space, which is handy in tight places, like on an airplane or bus with a small tray table. The 11th Edition has many upgrades over its predecessor, including an OLED display option, a 1440p webcam, and Wi-Fi 7. Along with the device, Microsoft has released a new Flex keyboard—sold separately—which sports a haptic touchpad and Bluetooth connectivity. The latter lets you use the keyboard even when detached from the device, so you have more flexibility to position the device to your liking. The display still supports pen input, but again, it's a separate purchase.

An important thing to know about this model is that it uses an ARM-based Snapdragon SoC. You can choose between the X Plus and the X Elite chip; both are fast enough to handle general productivity tasks and very power-efficient. However, many Windows programs don't run natively on ARM, so it's best to check that the apps you use are compatible first. Also worth noting are the limitations regarding the display options: the X Plus model has an IPS panel, while the X Elite model has an OLED panel. The OLED display produces deeper blacks but exhibits the 'screen door effect,' a grid-like pattern some people may find distracting. Get the X Plus model if these issues bother you; just know you'll have to compromise a bit on multi-thread performance.

  5. Best Lightweight Workstation

For those with a demanding workload like video editing, 3D graphics, or AI development, the Apple MacBook Pro 14 (2024) is your best bet for working on the go. This premium model has a compact design and only weighs 3.4 lbs (1.6 kg), making it one of the lightest and most portable workstations on the market. Apple doesn't skimp on build quality—the laptop feels incredibly well-built, sporting an all-aluminum chassis that exhibits little to no flex. The user experience is incredible; it has a gorgeous 120Hz Mini LED display, a tactile keyboard, an easy-to-use haptic touchpad, and plenty of ports, including three USB-Cs, an HDMI, and a full-size SD card reader. The speakers are among the best on the market, and the same goes for its webcam.

Apple's new M4 chips are fast and as power-efficient as ever, giving you tons of processing power to tackle even the most intensive tasks while still lasting a full workday on battery. Other upgrades and new features on this M4 model include a higher peak display brightness of 1000 cd/m² in SDR (outdoors), an optional nano-texture display finish that further cuts glare, and a new 12 MP camera with Center Stage support. The Pro/Max models' USB-C ports get Thunderbolt 5 support, and the base M4 model now has three USB-C ports with the same external display support as the Pro models. Apple has focused a lot on AI with this generation of MacBook Pros—whether or not you care about AI, at least something good came out of it, as the base M4 model now comes with 16GB of RAM.

  6. Best Lightweight Gaming Laptop

Current Deal: The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) has dropped in price by $400 at BestBuy.com.

The best portable laptop for gaming we've tested is the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024). This compact 14-inch model is easy to carry around and packs enough processing power to provide a smooth gaming experience in demanding AAA games. It sports a gorgeous 120Hz 2.8k OLED display, a tactile keyboard, and one of the best speaker systems you can find on a Windows machine. You get a wide port selection for peripherals and external displays, including two USB-Cs and an HDMI 2.1, as well as Wi-Fi 6E wireless connectivity for a fast and stable internet connection when gaming online.

Configuration-wise, you can choose between an AMD Ryzen 7 or 9 CPU paired with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050, 4060, or 4070 discrete GPU. If you don't mind playing your games at 1080p, you can go with a 4050 model, but for 1440p gaming (or at the display's native 2.8k resolution), we recommend upgrading to a 4060 or 4070. Storage configuration maxes out at 1TB, which isn't a lot considering the size of most modern titles, but thankfully, it's user-replaceable. Unfortunately, the battery life lasts less than two hours when gaming, so you'll need to bring the charger when gaming on the go.

Notable Mentions

  • Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025):

The Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025) is a great Windows alternative to the Apple MacBook Air 13 (M4, 2025). Though a larger device, it's only marginally heavier than the MacBook Air at 3.1 lbs. It has a wider port selection and a longer battery life. However, it's more expensive, and its OLED display flickers at 480Hz, which can bother people sensitive to screen flickering, resulting in more eye strain.

  • LG gram 16 (2024):

If you want a lightweight Windows laptop with a large screen, the LG gram 16 (2024) is worth considering. At 2.6 lbs, it weighs the same as the Apple MacBook Air 13 (M4, 2025); however, its lighweight design comes at the cost of build quality, as its magnesium alloy chassis doesn't feel as sturdy or rigid as the MacBook.

  • Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024):

The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) is a good option if you want something cheaper than the

Acer Swift Go 14 (2024). It's a 2-in-1 convertible, so you can use it as a tablet, and its keyboard feels more tactile. However, it doesn't have nearly as much processing power and runs Chrome OS, so it's better suited for lighter tasks that you can access via the Chrome browser or an Android app.

  • Acer Chromebook Plus 515 (2023): The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 (2023) is a decent Chromebook with more processing power than the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3i Chromebook 14 (2023). It also has a better keyboard and touchpad. However, its display doesn't get nearly as bright, so it's only suitable for use in dark to moderately lit rooms. Its battery life is also shorter at around eight to nine hours of light use. See our review
  • Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021):

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet is a good alternative to the Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Edition (2024) if you need a cheaper laptop for media consumption. It has a nice OLED display, and its battery lasts over seven hours of video playback. Unfortunately, it has an uncomfortable keyboard, a small and sometimes unresponsive touchpad, and a very limited port selection. Also, its SoC can only handle extremely light workloads.
