Best Cordless Vacuums

A good cordless vacuum is a helpful addition to any household cleaning arsenal. When you don't need to worry about staying in range of an outlet, they can make it easy to clean small, out-of-the-way areas inside your home and in tighter spaces like car interiors. You also don't have to worry about a power cord getting snagged on a piece of furniture, bringing a frustrating pause to your cleaning session. Of course, a cordless vacuum can't offer the indefinite runtime of a corded option. For many, however, this trade-off is worth these appliances' near-infinite range.

We've tested over 100 vacuums, and below are our recommendations for the best cordless vacuums. We selected these picks based on their performance on different surface types and their feature set, battery life, and price. For more options, look at our lists of the best vacuums, the best stick vacuums, and the best vacuums for high-pile carpet.

  1. Best Cordless Vacuum

The Dyson V15 Detect is the best cordless vacuum we've tested. While it's hardly the newest kid on the block, having been replaced by the Dyson Gen5detect as the brand's cordless flagship, it's still a top choice and one that performs very similarly to its successor but at a slightly more attainable price. It's equipped with a 230 AW suction motor, which is remarkably powerful for a cordless stick vacuum. Its built-in piezo sensor measures and counts debris sucked into the vacuum, so you can monitor allergen levels inside your home, and allows it to change its suction setting depending on the floor type you're on. At about 6.5 pounds, it's heavier than some other stick vacuums on the market, though far from unwieldy. Unfortunately, its strong suction can cause it to get stuck on thick, shag-pile rugs.

If you're looking for a cordless vacuum that's better suited for those with allergies, the Samsung Bespoke Jet is a solid option. It comes with a charging rack that doubles as a self-emptying station; debris gets transferred from the vacuum's dustbin through an airtight seal into a dirtbag with the press of a button. However, the Samsung vacuum lacks Dyson's automatic power adjustment feature, and its twin roller floorhead is bulkier, making it less maneuverable. Alternatively, if you want a better-built cordless stick vacuum with an automatic power adjustment feature, consider the Miele Triflex HX2. Just be aware that it has a smaller dustbin and a more limited selection of attachments than the Dyson.

  2. Best Mid-Range Cordless Vacuum

Our best cordless vacuum pick in the mid-range category is the Shark Stratos Cordless. Its bulkier twin-roller floorhead and relatively heavy body make it less portable than the Dyson V15 Detect, and its suction motor isn't quite as powerful. That said, it has a few advantages beyond a lower price tag. Like the Dyson, it has an automatic power adjustment system, so it can increase its suction level when passing over an area with a significant concentration of debris. It also has an odor-neutralization system in the form of a replaceable cartridge mounted in its floorhead. The cartridge emits a laundry detergent-like scent as you clean, though this can quickly become overwhelming if you use the vacuum often.

Its maximum battery life of about an hour is fairly long as far as these types of vacuums go, but note that it takes almost four hours to recharge, which is inconvenient during longer cleaning sessions. This vacuum's hinged wand means you can clean under most tables and chairs without having to bend down too much. Unfortunately, its floorhead can also easily get bogged down in thick-pile rugs.

  3. Best Lower Mid-Range Cordless Vacuum

The Tineco PURE ONE S11 is the best cordless vacuum cleaner at a mid-range price point that we've tested. Like the pricier Shark Stratos Cordless, it has an automatic power adjustment feature that enables it to increase its suction strength when passing over an area with a large amount of debris. It also features a HEPA filter that's fairly effective in trapping allergens as you clean. This variant of the S11 comes with a combination crevice tool/dusting brush and a miniature turbo brush that's pretty effective in handling pet hair on upholstered furniture.

Unfortunately, there are a couple of downsides compared to the Shark. It doesn't feel as sturdily built, has a shorter battery life of around 40 minutes, and doesn't perform as well on carpeted floors. At a little under six pounds, it's very easy to pick up and carry, but its floorhead pivoting mechanism feels cheap and doesn't operate smoothly, making it challenging to maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. If you're looking for something that feels better built, the Shark Cordless Pro is a good choice, though it performs worse on carpets.

  4. Best Budget Cordless Vacuum

The Wyze Cordless Vacuum is the best cordless model we've tested in the budget range. Unlike the pricier Tineco PURE ONE S11, this wallet-friendly cordless stick vacuum has no automatic power adjustment feature. If that's not a dealbreaker, the Wyze is definitely worth a look. It still delivers good debris-pickup performance on bare floors and carpeting and effectively clears away pet hair thanks to its stiff-bristled brushroll. Luckily, you can easily remove the roller to clear out any tangled hair or trapped fur, too.

The battery lasts around an hour, which is not only on the longer side for a cordless model in this price range but also exceeds the pricier Tineco's runtime. Accessories include an upholstery nozzle, a slide-on dusting brush, and a crevice tool—you'll have to buy the miniature turbo brush separately. Still, if you have a lot of upholstered surfaces to clean, you may find it a worthwhile investment. Unfortunately, the Wyze's thin, plastic chassis feels even more cheaply built than the Tineco's and is prone to scratches.

While it's important to note that this model has been discontinued, it's still available through various retailers, and with a deep discount at Walmart. There's also a newer but more barebones model available, the Wyze Cordless Vacuum S. However, its smaller battery doesn't last quite as long, and it takes longer to recharge as well. Also, its motor is less powerful, and you lose some accessories like the wall mount and 2-in-1 brush. Given these considerations, getting the original model while it's still available is the best choice.

  5. Best Lightweight Cordless Vacuum

If you're looking for a vacuum that emphasizes portability above all else, check out the Dyson Digital Slim. Compared to the older Dyson Omni-glide, which had a unique pivoting floorhead that allowed for near omnidirectional cleaning capability, the Digital Slim opts for a more conventional design that's closer in appearance to a shrunken-down Dyson V15 Detect. While this change does result in less effortless maneuverability, the Digital Slim moves ahead of the Omni-glide in most other respects, with a much improved max battery life of nearly an hour and superior debris-pickup performance on carpeted surfaces.

That being said, while it offers improvements over its predecessor, it still falls short of the high standard set by top-tier Dysons, like the aforementioned V15. You'll need to make several passes to clean larger debris properly, and it can struggle to lift finer dirt particles pressed deep into carpet fibers. If you don't mind using a slightly heavier vacuum, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is a good compromise, offering markedly more power than the Digital Slim without the bulk of the full-size V15.

Notable Mentions

  • Dyson Gen5detect/Gen5detect Absolute:

The Dyson Gen5detect/Gen5detect Absolute replaces the Dyson V15 Detect as the brand's flagship cordless stick vacuum and is among the best cordless vacuums we've tested. But aside from minor updates like a revamped control scheme and brighter LED light for its fluffy-roller floorhead, it isn't all that different from its predecessor. That said, if price isn't a deciding factor for you, it's a top-tier choice.

  • Dyson Gen5outsize/Gen5outsize Absolute: The Dyson Gen5outsize/Gen5outsize Absolute is effectively an enlarged version of the Gen5detect/Gen5detect Absolute. Like its smaller stablemate, it delivers impressive suction performance, but it's even pricier, and its bigger size makes it more of a hassle to maneuver than the Dyson V15 Detect. See our review
  • Miele Duoflex HX1:

The Miele Duoflex HX1 is a convertible stick vacuum that feels considerably better built than the Dyson V15 Detect and comes with a broad array of attachments, not to mention an automatic power adjustment system. That said, its actual debris-pickup performance lags a little behind.

  • LG CordZero A9 [A916, A916BM]:

The LG CordZero A9 is a fairly simple cordless stick vacuum. It executes pretty well on the fundamentals, with solid build quality, good maneuverability, and strong overall performance. However, unlike newer models like the Shark Stratos Cordless, it can't adjust its suction power automatically.

  • Samsung Jet 75: The Samsung Jet 75 is a good alternative to the Shark Stratos Cordless if you prioritize raw suction performance over convenience features like the Shark's automatic power adjustment system or self-cleaning floorhead. See our review
